Three steps are involved in the mechanism of hydration of ethene to yield ethanol.
(1) The electrophillic attack of hydronium ion protonates ethene to form carbocation.
(2) Water (as a nucleophile) attacks carbocation.
(3) Deprotonation gives ethanol.
