When aniline is treated with sodium nitrite and HCl in cold conditions, benzene diazonium chloride is obtained.
Benzene diazonium chloride is then coupled with p-methyl aniline to obtain 4-methyl-2-(phenyldiazenyl) aniline as the principle product.
