The lipid bilayer forms the cell membrane.

The most abundant lipid present in the cell membrane is a phospholipid. 

These have a polar head made of phosphorus and a non-polar lipid tail.

They are arranged such that the polar head is exposed to the outside and the non-polar tail lies on the inside.
