Question

An ideal gas with pressure P volume V and temperature T is expanded isothermally to a volume 2V and a final pressure PI . The same gas is expanded adiabatically to a volume 2V the final pressure is PA. In terms of the ratio of the two specific heats for the gas γ the ratio PI/PA is:

2γ−1

21−γ

2γ

Given that:- the pressure = P
volume V
Temperature P
When expanded isothermally to a volume 2V. Pressure PI
When expanded adiabatically to a volume 2V. Pressure PA.
Ratio of two specific heats = 2
We need to find the ratio PI/PA.
Since it is first compressed isothermally ⇒  PV PI(2V)
Again when it is compressed adiabatically. PI=P2

Pvγ-PA(v)γ=PA=P2r

PIPA=P2P2r=p2×2γP22γ-1

2γ−1 is the correct.
